The “Yi Peng Tradition”—also known as the “Thai Lantern Festival,” “Lanna Lantern Festival,” or “Chiang Mai Lantern Festival”—along with the “Loi Krathong Festival,” is a grand, ancient tradition of the Lanna kingdom in northern Thailand. The Loi Krathong Festival marks the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the cool winter, bringing pleasant weather.

During the festival, sky lanterns are released into the night sky at “I Love Ban Thi,” located approximately 28 kilometers from Chiang Mai city center (about a 30-minute drive). The event will take place on November 24–25, 2026, at I Love Ban Thi—a cultural and artistic heritage village known for its distinct ethnic identities, including the Tai Lue, Tai Yong, Shan (Tai Yai), Tai Khuen, and other groups, making it a prominent landmark for travelers.

Held under the theme “Moonlight Sky Lantern,” the event aims to promote community-based tourism. The location features sacred places and an ancient ordination hall (ubosot). When the Yi Peng and Loi Krathong festival arrives, people gather here to light small earthen candles (phang prathip), pray, and release sky lanterns into the moonlight as an act of faith and belief in bringing good fortune into their lives.
